SCIENTIFIC PURPOSE

Laser cooling of atoms has been extensively developped these last years. Macroscopic samples of atoms in the same quantum state (known as the Bose-Einstein Condensates) are, nowadays widely used in the labs. Besides fundamental interest related to problems of condensated matter Physics (superfluidity, superconductivity), laser cooling allows several applications in other fields.

The development of methods to manipulate atoms and molecules paved the way to impressive recent advances in precision measurements. This year, the focus of our PreDoc school will be indeed on ultracold atoms and molecules for precision measurements, tests of fundamental physics and applications. After a series of introductory lectures devoted to cold atoms and molecules, quantum gases, interactions, optical lattices, the program includes lectures on optical clocks, atom interferometry, precision measurements and fundamental physics tests, quantum simulation. Both experimental approaches and theoretical concepts will be covered, as well as a general overview of the fields and the underlying physics.

GENERAL INFORMATION

This school is mostly intended for students who are pursuing their PhD Thesis (details). A few participants at the post-doctoral level will be also accepted. The school is opened to participants from all countries.

All the lectures will be given in English. The number of participants is limited to improve the exchanges between students and lecturers.

APPLICATIONS & Grants

This school is opened to students and young post-docs of any citizenship.
The applications are done on-line.
Registration fees cover full-board accomodation and lodging at les Houches school of Physics.
They amount to :

  • 500 Euros for students in the first two years of PhD
  • 675 Euros for all the others.

A few grants covering the registration fees (but not travel expenses) are available. Applications must be completed on-line before June 22nd, 2014. Applicants will be informed of their selection by July 12th, 2014.

To apply, you should prepare your ID picture (in jpeg format) and your Curriculum Vitae (in pdf format). In your CV, please include a paragraph giving the reasons for which you apply.

To be considered, the application form and the curriculum vitae have to be followed by a recommendation e-mail from the Thesis Supervisor. It should be done before June 22nd 2014.

FUNDING INSTITUTIONS

The course has been initiated several years ago by the International Cold Atom Network, INTERCAN, which is promoting European collaboration of research and education in the field of dilute atomic and molecular quantum systems.

The GDR Atomes froids, supported by the CNRS, is now pursuing this task.

Les Houches est un village de la vallée de Chamonix, dans les Alpes françaises. Fondée en 1951, l’Ecole est située dans un groupe de chalets montagnards entourés de prairies et de bois, à une altitude de 1150 m, face à la chaîne du Mont Blanc. C’est un lieu idéal pour le travail intellectuel et les sports de montagne.

L’Ecole de Physique des Houches est affiliée à l’Université Joseph Fourier et à l’Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble. Elle est subventionnée par le Ministère de la Jeunesse, de l’Education Nationale et de la Recherche, le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) et la Direction des Sciences de la Matière du Commissariat à l’Energie atomique (CEA/DSM).

L’hébergement et les repas sont assurés pour tous les participants. Les étudiants bénéficieront en permanence de salles de réunion et d’une bibliothèque.
