Probing Fermi gases with Bragg spectroscopy

Abstract

Ultracold gases of fermionic atoms provide new opportunities for the study of pairing and superfluidity. This talk will describe experiments performed at Swinburne University using Bragg spectroscopy to study the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer crossover in a gas of 6Li near a Feshbach resonance. A smooth transition from bosonic molecular dimers to free fermionic atoms is observed along with a clear signature of pairing above the Feshbach resonance. Bragg spectroscopy probes the dynamic and static structure factors and provides a direct link to two-body correlations. We have characterised these correlations and measured their density dependence across the broad Feshbach resonance at 834 G. We have also performed preliminary studies of the temperature dependence of pairing using Bragg spectroscopy.
