Quantum Atomic Gas – theory

In this team, we conduct basic research on the theory of quantum, ultracold gases with special emphasis on the following topics :

• Degenerate Bose and Fermi gases • Anderson localization • disorder-induced fluid-insulator transitions • strongly-correlated quantum gases • multi-component atomic gases

Coexistence of localized and extended states in a disordered trap. The figure shows the distribution of the sizes of the eigenstates of a quantum particle placed in a disordered potential and in the presence of a harmonic trap, as a function of their energy. The existence of two branches shows that localized and extended states can coexist in the same energy window.

Anderson localization Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The figure shows the 1D Lyapunov exponent (inverse localization length) of the quasiparticles as a function of the typical wave vector and of the disorder correlation length.
