Noise and Measurement

Team leader : Antoine Heidmann

Our research deals with the characterization and the control of the noises in interferometric measurements of small displacements.
The study of optomechanical coupling yields an understanding of how quantum fluctuations are part of the measurement process.

We are also interested by the study of the sensitivity limits in gravitational interferometers such as Virgo or the second generation gravitational antennas, which should be mostly limited by quantum noises.

We have two experimental setups running, both dedicated to high-sensitivity displacement sensing.

  • The first setup is dedicated to the study of quantum optomechanical effects.
  • The second one aims at demonstrating the quantum position fluctuations of a micro-mechanical resonator.
